James Coates is an American minister and politician. James Coates may also refer to: *Jim Coates (born 1932), former United States Major League Baseball pitcher *James Hugh Buchanan Coates, (1851–1935), New Zealand sportsman and banker *James Coates, born 23 Jan 1815 in England was an originator of the Treaty of Waitangi, traveled up and down the coast of the North Island getting it signed, remained in NZ when Russell's boat returned to announce Britain's newest crown colony, was the second white to marry in NZ, moved to what is now Auckland and helped lay it out, and was the father of William Hobson C, August John C, James Hugh Buchanan C (noted above), Lavinia C, and Georgina Sophia C.
